Congratulations! You just moved into your new home and (most of) the boxes are put away. It’s now time to throw a housewarming party to show off your humble abode.

But between buying a house, paying for a moving company and continuing to pay daily expenses (like dog food), your bank account has taken a bit of a hit. The good news — hosting a housewarming party doesn’t need to be the equivalent of a month’s mortgage.

Below are 5 secrets on how to throw a housewarming party without breaking the bank.

1. Create a guest list.

Get a headcount of (around) how many people will be attending the party. This is extremely important to know so you don’t over purchase (or under purchase) the essentials such as food, drinks, plastic cutlery and more. Nothing’s worse than planning for a party and ending up with too much food/drink…or my personal nightmare, not enough!

2. Send paperless invitations.

While getting an invitation in the mail is always fun, it’s 2018 and more people are checking their digital mailbox. Use online evite sites like PaperlessPost to create customized invites that will be sent right to your guests inbox. We all know how annoying it is when guests forget to RSVP. Tools like PaperlessPost have RSVP tracking and guest messaging built in so you can focus on the most important part — food and drinks!

3. Focus on the essentials.

Keep in mind that you aren’t throwing a huge party for your parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. It’s just a housewarming party. That said, focus on the essentials and leave the expectations of a buffet style spread at the old house. Bulk appetizer-plates are easy to pick up at a Sam’s Club or Costco and no one will know if the plasticware is from your local Dollar Store. Also, no one’s expecting a full service bar (except your Great Aunt Pat). Again, stick to the essentials (white/red wine, 24-pack of beer, seltzer water and soft drinks), and be sure to supply the (cheaper) champagne for a small toast. In the invite, feel free to tell your guests instead of a housewarming gift, they can bring favorite spirits to share.

4. Borrow belongings.

It’s an hour before the party and you realize you don’t have the ice cooler or extra chairs for outdoor seating. Relax- that’s what neighbors (and family) are for! Lean on your inner-circle to help supply the miscellaneous items like a food warmer for the pigs-in-a-blanket or an extra foldable table so the kids have a place to make a mess. While you might be called “the hostess with the mostess” let’s be real…you’re not perfect and neither are your guests!

5. Be a great host.

In the spirit of being the “hostess-with-the-mostess” note that your guests aren’t coming to just see your new home. They are coming to see YOU in your new home. That said, no matter how many cupcakes and balloons you buy, or how many dishes need washing, what matters most is spending time with those who have come to support you and your next adventure. Remind yourself that this is a time for you to be celebrating too.
