5 Ways to Make the Best of Your Empty Nest

When it comes to empty nests, everyone has a different story that comes along with distinct feelings. Whatever your case, your home now has a few less people, and a bit more space.

It may take some getting used to, but living in an empty nest doesn’t have to feel empty! If you look on the bright side, you should now have some more spare time, and you can use that time to focus on Y-O-U.

Here are some of my tips for making the best of your empty nest.

1. Let yourself feel.

Whether you’re jumping with joy that your kid is finally out the door, or completely heartbroken that they’re no longer living under your roof, the first step to embracing your new empty nest is to let yourself feel whatever emotions come your way. Also, know that whatever you’re feeling is valid and that emotions will come in waves.

2. Take care of yourself.

Once you’ve allowed yourself to work through some feelings, it’s time to turn the focus to your health! You should now have some more time (and less excuses) to take care of your body and your mind. Instead of catering to your children’s schedules and eating habits, you can now form your own healthy routine.

3. Rediscover yourself.

When children leave home, it’s easy to feel like you’ve lost a sense of your identity. A very important and time-consuming role of your life seems to be gone. But, instead of just getting used to this lost role, you can replace it with other meaningful aspects of life. Was there anything you had to give up when you took on parenting? Any old passions, interests or hobbies that simply no longer fit into your life or schedule? This is the time to rediscover, reinvent and seek a new role for yourself.

4. Rekindle old friendships.

Do you have friendships from your past that were neglected or left dormant due to raising children? Reach out to these old friends and reinvest in growing your relationships. Interested in making some new friends and connections? Try volunteering, joining a group of like-minded people (for example a book club), or continue on to my next tip!

5. Try a new hobby.

If you are feeling lonely or purposeless, why not fill your time with something you’ve always wanted to try, but never had the time to before. Whether it’s photography, knitting, taking a writing class, volunteering or learning to speak Chinese, take the time you used to spend running your kids between football practice and dance class to explore your own unique interests. You’re also sure to connect with some like minded-people in the process!

Getting used to your new empty nest is a process that will most likely take time and a bit of effort. BUT, using these tips will help you get back to feeling like yourself in no time!
